Spartans fight off Knights

Lindsay Bowen scored 22 points to lead 11th-ranked Michigan State past No. 8 Rutgers, 73-71, yesterday in East Lansing, Mich., in the first matchup between the national powers.

Essence Carson of Rutgers missed from near the foul line as time expired, extending Michigan State's school-record, home-court winning streak to 22 games.

Liz Shimek scored 19 points for Michigan State (12-3). Cappie Pondexter had 24 points to lead Rutgers (10-2) before fouling out late. Carson added 17 points.

LSU 66, Minnesota 45 -- At Baton Rouge, La., Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles scored 21 points each, leading the third-ranked Lady Tigers.

Scholanda Hoston helped key a second-half burst of 15 straight points by LSU (13-0) and finished with 14 points. Natasha Williams led the 15th-ranked Golden Gophers (9-3) with 15 points.

Baylor 61, Texas 48 -- Sophia Young scored 25 points as the fourth-ranked Lady Bears beat the 23d-ranked Longhorns to extend their home-court winning streak to 23 games.

Just three days after the defending national champions had their overall 30-game winning streak snapped at Missouri, Baylor (11-1, 1-1 Big 12) trailed just twice. The Longhorns (6-6, 0-2) lost their third straight game.

Seton Hall 74, Notre Dame 61 -- Heta Korpivaara scored 13 of her 18 points in the second half to lead the Pirates (5-8, 0-2 Big East) to the upset of the 12th-ranked Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind.

The loss was the third straight for the Irish (9-4, 0-2), their longest losing streak in eight years.

DePaul 67, Marquette 52 -- Khara Smith matched a season high with 29 points and added 10 rebounds to lead the 13th-ranked Blue Demons (15-1, 2-1 Big East) to their eighth straight victory.

Stanford 76, Oregon 64 -- Candice Wiggins scorched the Ducks (10-4, 1-3 Pac-10) for a career-high 37 points as the No. 16 Cardinal (10-4, 5-1) prevailed on the road after trailing by 2 at the half.

Oklahoma 84, Colorado 61 -- At Norman, Okla., Courtney Paris notched her NCAA-leading 12th double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds as the 18th-ranked Sooners (12-3, 2-0 Big 12) rolled.

New Mexico 73, Colorado St. 57 -- Abbie Letz had 22 points and 10 rebounds to power the 21st-ranked Lobos (12-3, 2-0 Mountain West) in Fort Collins, Colo.

BYU 61, Utah 60 -- Mallary Gillespie's putback at the buzzer lifted the Cougars (12-1, 2-0 Mountain West) over the 22d-ranked Utes (9-4, 0-2) in Salt Lake City.
