The Boston College women's basketball team used a 21-6 run at the start of the second half yesterday to capture a 67-57 victory over Central Connecticut State in the first round of the University of Rhode Island Tournament at The Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I.
The Eagles (4-1) will play Vermont, which beat URI, 75-72, in today's final at 2 p.m.
Senior Kathrin Ress led the Eagles with 20 points and seven rebounds. Ress shot 7 for 9 from the field and 6 for 7 from the free throw line, while senior guard Kindyll Dorsey had 12 points.
Maryland 83, Gardner-Webb 41 -- Crystal Langhorne scored 16 points and Laura Harper had 11 as the top-ranked Terrapins (6-0) beat Gardner-Webb in the Junkanoo Jam on Grand Bahama Island.
N. Carolina 99, Sacramento St. 38 -- Erlana Larkins had 21 points and seven rebounds as the No. 2 Tar Heels (4-0) beat Sacramento State in the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu.
Tennessee 77, Stanford 60 -- In Knoxville, Tenn., Candace Parker scored 25 points, including her fourth career dunk, to help the fourth-ranked Vols (4-0) top the No. 11 Cardinal (2-2).
LSU 61, Tulsa 37 -- RaShonta LeBlanc scored 15 points, including two 3-pointers right after halftime, for the No. 9 Lady Tigers (6-2) in the UT-San Antonio Thanksgiving Classic.
Purdue 67, Arkansas St. 61 -- Katie Gearlds scored 17 points for the visiting No. 10 Boilermakers (6-0) in their first game since winning the Preseason WNIT.
Holy Cross 69, Buffalo 55 -- Laura Aloisi had 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the visiting Crusaders (3-3).
N. Carolina 101, Tennessee 87 -- Tyler Hansbrough bounced back from one of the worst games of his college career to score 27 points and lead the No. 2 Tar Heels (4-1) over the No. 22 Volunteers (4-2) in the third-place game of the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York. In the championship game, A.J. Graves scored 26 points as Butler (6-0) defeated Gonzaga, 79-71.
Pittsburgh 88, Florida St. 66 -- The No. 3 Panthers (6-0) went on a pivotal 13-0 run behind the outside shooting of Ronald Ramon and Antonio Graves not long after Florida State star Al Thornton got into foul trouble in the first half, and beat the previously unbeaten Seminoles in the Colonial Classic title game in Pittsburgh.
Ohio St. 91, Youngstown St. 57 -- Freshmen Daequan Cook and Mike Conley Jr. and backup center Matt Terwilliger led a first-half onslaught to power the No. 4 Buckeyes (6-0) at home.
Missouri St. 66, Wisconsin 64 -- Blake Ahearn scored 25 points in the 4-0 Bears' upset of the No. 7 Badgers (4-1) in a South Padre Island (Tex.) Invitational semifinal.
Kansas 64, Ball St. 46 -- Mario Chalmers hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points as the No. 10 Jayhawks (4-1) overcame awful first-half shooting in the Las Vegas Invitational.
Mercyhurst 3, Holy Cross 2 -- Crusader James Sixsmith scored a breakaway with 2:17 remaining in the third but Holy Cross (7-6-0, 6-4-0 Atlantic Hockey) couldn't get the equalizer in Erie, Pa.
Mercyhurst 4, BC 0 -- The No. 3-ranked Lakers (11-1-1) rebounded from their first loss with a shutout of the No. 9 Eagles (9-2-1) in the UNH Thanksgiving Tournament in Durham, N.H.
UNH 7, Wayne St. 1 -- Maggie Joyce of Norfolk had a goal and assisted on four more as the No. 2 Wildcats (13-1-1) pummeled the Warriors (5-8-0) in Durham, N.H.
