Miami grounds cold-shooting BC

Kathrin Ress had 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists but Boston College suffered from cold shooting and fell to Miami, 83-68, last night in Coral Gables, Fla., to remain winless in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Ress scored 14 second-half points but BC (10-8, 0-4) couldn't overcome an 11-point halftime deficit.

The Hurricanes (10-10, 1-4) hit five 3-pointers in the first half, three by junior Albrey Grimsley and two by junior Maurita Reid.

Grimsley's two consecutive threes gave the Hurricanes a 19-15 lead. The Hurricanes took the 11-point lead into the locker room when Reid hit her second 3-pointer with less than a minute to play. Miami shot 50 percent from the floor, while BC finished the half at 31 percent.

Renee Taylor led the Hurricanes with 26 points and Charmaine Clark added 20.

Duke 65, N.C. State 51 -- Brittany Mitch scored 8 of her 10 points during a decisive spurt that helped the No. 1 Blue Devils (19-0, 5-0 ACC) dodge a letdown and beat the Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C.

N. Carolina 78, Georgia Tech 31 -- Reserve Alex Miller scored 15 points, Ivory Latta added 14, and the No. 2 Tar Heels held the Yellow Jackets to their lowest score ever in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Tennessee 73, Mississippi St. 44 -- Fourth-ranked Tennessee got a glimpse of life without an ill Candace Parker, when Sidney Spencer scored 18 points and Shannon Bobbitt added 13 in the Lady Vols' home victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

Ohio St. 74, Wisconsin 51 -- Jessica Davenport scored 16 points and Brandie Hoskins had 15, leading the No. 5 Buckeyes over the Badgers in Madison, Wis.

LSU 76, Kentucky 58 -- Sylvia Fowles scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and the No. 8 Lady Tigers beat the Wildcats for their 40th consecutive victory at home.

Stanford 70, Oregon 48 -- Cissy Pierce scored a career-high 14 points, Kristen Newlin grabbed 10 of her 13 rebounds in the first half, and the No. 9 Cardinal won their 13th consecutive game, dropping the visiting Ducks.

UMass-Boston 82, Bridgewater St. 78 -- LaKeisha Tucker had 25 points and Lydia Coverdale added 16 as the host Beacons held off the Bears. Caitlin and Colleen Feeney had 22 points each as the Bears fell short in their second-half rally after trailing the Beacons, 41-34, in the first half.

Va. Comm. 80, Northeastern 74 -- Shaleyse Smallwood had 31 points and Ashlee Feldman added 23 for the Huskies, but Krystal Vaughn led four players in double figures with 16 points as the Rams defeated the Huskies in Richmond, Va.

Babson 74, Framingham St. 55 -- The host Beavers built a 40-24 lead at halftime, then withstood a second-half comeback attempt by the Rams for their fifth victory in six games. Suzy Ward had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Babson. Caitlin Boulier had 17 points and Linsey Poulson added 14.

UCLA 60, Arizona St. 50 -- Darren Collison scored 16 points to help the No. 3 Bruins (16-1, 5-1) rally in the second half for a victory over the Sun Devils in Los Angeles, and remain tied atop the Pac-10 with Oregon.

Oregon 66, Stanford 59 -- Aaron Brooks had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the No. 9 Ducks over the Cardinal in Eugene, Ore.

Duke 62, Wake Forest 40 -- Greg Paulus scored 17 points and Josh McRoberts had 11 points to lead the No. 14 Blue Devils past the Demon Deacons in Durham, N.C.

Maine 69, Vermont 64 -- Kevin Reed scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Black Bears over the Catamounts in Burlington, Vt.

UNH 75, Binghamton 72 -- Blagoj Janev scored 18 points to lead the visiting Wildcats over the Bearcats.

Tyrece Gibbs scored 16 points and Jermaine Anderson contributed 15 for New Hampshire (7-12, 3-3 America East). Mike Gordon scored 20 points to lead Binghamton (9-10, 2-5). Steve Proctor added 16 points and Lazar Trifunovic had 11.

Stony Brook 68, BU 62 -- Mitchell Beauford had 5 of his 18 points in overtime and the host Seawolves snapped their seven-game losing streak to the Terriers.

Lasell 74, Mount Ida 58 -- Jose Guitian scored 26 points and had 20 rebounds to spark the Lasers over the Mustangs in Newton. Mount Ida was led by Andreas Vasiliu, who had 22 points.
