Field hockey star to attend Harvard

After being recruited by more than 60 schools and visiting the campus of institutions such as Yale, the University of New Hampshire, Iowa, and Dartmouth, field hockey star Devon Shapiro has decided to attend Harvard University next fall.

The Dedham native had a highly successful season as a member of the Middlesex School field hockey team in Concord. Middlesex had a pair of firsts: an unbeaten season, and back-to-back New England Prep School championships.

Shapiro is one of the top prep players in the nation. She was one of 20 high school seniors in the country invited to the first round of tryouts for the US national team. The tryouts included collegiate All-Americans and players from NCAA championship teams.

During the summer, Shapiro played for an all-star team that visited Australia, and she was also one of only two high school seniors to play on the Eclipse, the New England entry in the highest-ranking field hockey league in the country (largely comprising present and former college, Olympic, and national team players).

But field hockey isn't Shapiro's only sport. She has been named Middlesex School's top female athlete during her sophomore and junior years.

Shapiro is also the captain of the Middlesex ski team. She has skied on the New Hampshire Junior Olympic Team, making her one of only a few athletes who have competed in the Junior Olympics in two different sports. Additionally, she is captain of the Middlesex softball team.

Soccer standout leads BU to title

Former Duxbury High School soccer star Brooks Bingham continues to shine at the collegiate level. After she earned America East Conference Rookie All-Star honors a year ago as a freshman midfielder for Boston University, Bingham made the most of her sophomore season.

Bingham started every game, scoring four goals and picking up five assists to lead the Terriers to the America East championship with a 7-1-1 conference mark. She played so well that opposing coaches named her to the conference all-star team. Bingham was one of three local women on the BU squad. Former Duxbury teammate, Whitney Chadwick, and Jena Harb of Norwood played for the AEC champions.

Joy Gueverra, who starred at Marshfield High School, was named to the America East All-Rookie team this year. Gueverra was red-shirted during her freshman year at Stony Brook University in New York and made her debut this season as a sophomore. She scored four goals in 14 games.

Sacred Heart on MIAA honor roll

Sacred Heart High School in Kingston has been named to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Sportsmanship Honor Roll. The recognition is bestowed on

member schools that have demonstrated a strong commitment to the ideals of sportsmanship throughout their athletic program. Schools named to the MIAA Sportsmanship Honor Roll did not have a coach or student-athlete suspended from an athletic contest in the 2002-2003 academic year. A delegation of Sacred Heart High School student-athletes and coaches attended the 10th MIAA Sportsmanship Summit where they received official recognition by MIAA on Nov. 10.

Those attending included coaches Marie Bruninghaus and Jon Olson, and student athletes Kim Reske of Duxbury and Davis Sullivan of Kingston.

Marsden awarded first-team honors

University of Massachusetts at Lowell senior midfielder Martha Marsden of Hull has been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division 2 All-America First Team. The honor was the first for Marsden.

UMass-Lowell posted a 12-4 record in the Northeast-10, and a 15-8 mark overall, good for second place. It was also the River Hawks' best season since 1997.

UMass-Lowell rallied in the postseason, first winning the NE-10 tournament title and earning the right to host the NCAA tournament semifinals and championship.

After beating Bryant College, 1-0, in the semifinal, UMass-Lowell lost to Bloomsburg College, 4-1, in the second round. Marsden was the best player on the River Hawks during the stretch run. She scored all eight goals and 10 assists (26 points) over the final 10 matches of the regular season and four postseason games. More impressive is that she either scored or assisted 15 of UML's last 26 goals of the year.

Booth is named to academic team

Russell Booth of Norwood is one of those rare collegians who excel in the classroom and on the playing field. Booth, a standout on the Bridgewater State College football team, has been named to the Academic All-District 1 College Division first team selected by college sports information directors.

Booth, a mathematics major, earned a 3.31 grade point average. He also had a solid season at defensive end. He led the Bears in tackles for loss with 10, was second in sacks with four, second in solo tackles with 34, and second in total tackles with 53. Nobody on the team had more pass breaks (4) than Booth. This is the second year he earned a spot on the all-smarts team.
