BC nets Rothschild

Amanda Rothschild of Sherborn is headed to Boston College, where she will play hockey for new BC coach Katie King. She will arrive at the Heights after a stellar career at Deerfield Academy, including a senior year in which she was the starting goalie for the field hockey, hockey, and lacrosse teams. Last Sunday, Rothschild received the Saul Nechtem All-Around Athlete Award and Ice Hockey All-Scholastic Award from the New England Sports Lodge of B'nai B'rith at its 27th annual All-Scholastic Breakfast.

"In her nomination of Rothschild, Deerfield coach Kimberly Wright wrote: "Amanda possesses all the finest qualities that a coach looks for in an athlete: persistence, tenacity, selflessness, sheer grit, but most importantly, a genuine desire to support her teammates and to respect the game and all that goes with it."

Reifsnyder has a blast

Adrian Reifsnyder of Newton cocaptained the Boston Blast FC squad at the Mass. Youth Soccer U-14 State Cup title this past weekend at MYS's new complex in Lancaster. The Blast, which defeated the FC Greater Boston Bolts, 2-0, in Sunday's final, will represent the state at the Region 1 Championships in Portland, Maine, this week. The winning team will advance to the national championships in Frisco, Texas, in July. For the past three years, Reifsnyder also has played center midfield for the Massachusetts Olympic Development Program team, serving as captain this season and last. This fall, he will be a freshman at the Roxbury Latin School.

Honors for Nygaard

Leanne Nygaard of Medway shined in the classroom and as a track and field athlete at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth this spring. On the track, the junior earned Little East All-Conference honors in three events, finishing second in the 1,500 meters (at 5 minutes 1.37 seconds), placing third in the 800 meters, and running a leg on the 4-by-400 relay team that placed second in 4:15.91. Nygaard was named All-New England Alliance in all three events. A nursing major who carries a 4.0 grade-point average, she has been named to the second team of ESPN the Magazine's /Co-SIDA Academic All-District team. "This is a very special award for our department, as well as for Leanne. It sets a standard for the rest of the people out there, and, hopefully, they can follow our lead," said UMass-Dartmouth coach Devlyn Lovell.
