Madore (38 saves) stymies Terriers

Freshman Rob Madore made a career-high 38 saves, senior assistant captain Peter Lenes scored a goal and had two assists, and junior Brayden Irwin notched the winner in the third period to lead No. 15 Vermont to a 4-3 victory over No. 2 Boston University in front of 5,187 last night at Agganis Arena.
Vermont improved to 6-3-2 (3-3-1 Hockey East), while BU dropped to 7-3-0 (4-3-0).
Junior Luke Popko and seniors Chris Higgins and Jason Lawrence scored for the Terriers, who fell at home for the first time this season and had their 11-game regular-season home winning streak snapped.
There were three ties in the game. BU scored first to take its first and only lead before rallying from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits.
Less than three minutes after the Terriers knotted the game at 3-3 with a power-play tally from Lawrence, Irwin redirected a pass above the right post from Lenes on a Vermont power play with 5:59 left in regulation.
Cornell 2, Harvard 1 - Riley Nash broke a second-period tie with his second goal of the game as the 14th-ranked Big Red overcame a 35-save effort by Matt Hoyle and held on for the win against No. 18 Harvard at Ithaca, N.Y.
Michael Biega gave the Crimson (4-3-1, 4-3-1 ECAC) a first-period lead, but the Big Red (3-0-2, 3-0-2) tied the game and took advantage of four Harvard penalties in the second period to take the lead.
Biega scored at 5:41, but the Big Red tied it less than four minutes later when Nash scored on a quick shot from the slot.
Nash put Cornell ahead at 16:51 of the second. Following a flurry of shots from in front of the crease, Nash's shot barely trickled over the goal line.
Maine 2, Merrimack 1 - Brett Carriere scored the winner midway through the first period and Dave Wilson made 19 saves as the host Black Bears extended their winning streak to six games with a Hockey East victory over the Warriors.
Merrimack (3-6-2, 1-5-1) struck first, with J.C. Robitaille scoring 46 seconds into the game.
The Black Bears responded five minutes later when Will O'Neill tied it with his first collegiate goal.
Maine (7-3-0, 4-2-0) held a 23-20 shot advantage but was 0 for 6 on the power play.
UMass-Lowell 6, PC 1 - Kory Falite had a pair of tallies and Nevin Hamilton made 30 saves as the River Hawks (6-4-0, 4-2-0) routed the Friars in a Hockey East contest at Tsongas Arena.
The River Hawks grabbed a 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the first 2:01. Mike Potacco redirected a shot from Jeremy Dehner just 53 seconds into the game for a 1-0 edge. At 2:01, Falite scored an unassisted goal, his seventh of the season.
The Friars (2-8-1, 0-7-1) had several chances to get back in the game, but Hamilton stopped every bid. The River Hawks converted their first power-play chance of the night at the 17:35 to make it 3-0 when Nick Schaus set up Nick Monroe in front of the goal and Monroe tapped the puck into the empty net for his first goal of the season.
The Friars finished with a 31-27 shot advantage.
Dartmouth 1, Colgate 0 - Adam Estoclet's strike 52 seconds into the third period stood up as Jody O'Neill made 28 stops to lift the Big Green (5-2-0, 5-1-0 ECAC) over the Raiders (4-4-1, 1-3-1) at Hamilton, N.Y.
Quinnipiac 4, Clarkson 2 - David Marshall had two goals and the Bobcats (5-4-1, 3-2-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held off the Golden Knights (2-5-2, 1-4-0) in an ECAC game at Potsdam, N.Y.
AIC 5, Holy Cross 1 - Steve McLeod and Chad Richardson each had a goal and an assist and Dan Ramirez had 37 saves to send the Yellow Jackets (3-8-0, 3-6-0) to an Atlantic Hockey rout of the Crusaders (2-7-1, 2-6-1) at West Springfield.
Bentley 4, Canisius 3 - Dustin Cloutier's strike with 2:11 remaining in the game powered the host Falcons (4-4-1, 2-2-1 Atlantic) past the Griffins.
Bowdoin 4, Babson 2 - Colin MacCormack had a goal and an assist to power the host Polar Bears in the season opener for both teams.
Middlebury 4, Conn. College 3 - John Sullivan scored a pair of goals and John Yanchek had 19 saves as the visiting Panthers edged the Camels in the opener for both teams.
Hamilton 5, Wesleyan 4 - Chris Lorenc had a pair of goals, including the winner at 12:46 of the third period, as the Continentals opened the season with a win over the host Cardinals.
Williams 4, Tufts 2 - Sasha Voloshin snapped a 2-2 tie with an unassisted goal 7:08 into the third period to power the host Ephs (1-0-0).
Colby 3, UMass-Boston 2 - Michael Doherty had two goals, including the winner, as the host White Mules edged the Beacons. Matt Atsoff and Brian Albert scored for UMass-Boston
Salem State 5, St. Michael's 0 - Mike Genovese had a pair of goals and Ryan Hatch made 47 saves as the visiting Vikings won their season opener. Tyler Bilton had 44 saves for the Knights.
Amherst 5, Trinity 3 - Eddie Effinger had two goals and Jeff Landers snapped a 3-3 tie in the third period to give the Lord Jeffs a victory in their opener at Hartford.
Norwich 4, Southern Maine 2 - Chad Anderson snapped a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal at 17:13 of the second period to propel the Cadets over the visiting Huskies.
Women
Colgate 5, Harvard 5 - Sarah Vaillancourt had a pair of goals for the host Crimson, who squandered a two-goal second-period lead. Hannah Milan scored twice and Kimberly Sass had 36 saves for Colgate (7-6-1, 2-2-1 ECAC). Brittany Martin (15 saves) and Christina Kessler shared the net duties for Harvard (3-2-2, 3-2-2).Dartmouth 5, Cornell 4 - Sarah Parsons tied the game at 11:26 of the third and Sarah Newman notched her second goal of the game with 55 seconds remaining to lift the Big Green (6-1-1, 5-1-1 ECAC) at Ithaca, N.Y.![]()
