Northeastern gets act together vs. RPI

A night after falling to No. 7 Princeton in the opening round of the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament, fourth-ranked Northeastern took some consolation in winning the third-place game, 5-1, last night over RPI at Troy, N.Y.

Rob Rassey had a goal and an assist and Ryan Ginand had a shorthanded strike for the Huskies (10-3-2).

Brad Thiessen made 25 stops for NU, while Allen York had 30 saves for RPI (2-10-1).

Vermont 3, Maine 2 - Wahsontiio Stacey broke a 1-1 tie in the third period and Josh Burrows scored the winner five minutes later as the No. 13 Catamounts took down the Black Bears at Burlington Vt.

Gustav Nyquist and Brian Flynn scored for Maine (7-4-1, 4-3-1 Hockey East), which received a 20-save performance from Scott Darling.

Braden Irwin also scored for Vermont (9-3-2, 6-3-1).

Merrimack 4, UNH 3 - Rob Ricci tied the game at 7:37 of the third period and Jesse Todd notched the winner more than three minutes later as the Warriors earned a Hockey East victory at Durham, N.H.

Joe Cannata had 33 stops for Merrimack (4-7-3, 2-6-2), while Brian Foster had 23 for New Hampshire (5-6-3, 3-4-0).

Union 4, Providence 2 - With the score tied at 2, senior Matt Cook scored an unassisted goal 2:53 in the third as the Dutchmen (6-4-1) roughed up the Friars in a nonleague game in Schenectady, N.Y.

John Cavanagh and Mark Fayne score for Providence (2-11-1).

UMass-Lowell 6, RIT 3 - Scott Campbell had three goals and two assists as the River Hawks (8-5-0) cruised past the Tigers (5-8-1) in a nonconference game at Tsongas Arena.

UConn 4, Brown 1 - Michael Coppola had a goal and two assists for the Huskies (4-9-0), who handled the winless Bears (0-4-1) in Providence.

Holy Cross 4, Sacred Heart 2 - Jay Silvia, Jordan Cyr, Mark Znutas, and Peter Lorinser scored as the Crusaders (4-8-1, 4-6-1 Atlantic) triumphed in Milford, Conn.

Bowdoin 4, UMass-Dartmouth 2 - Mike Collins, Graham Sisson, and Colin MacCormack scored consecutively in the third period to lift the Polar Bears (2-0-0) past the Corsairs (5-2-1) to claim the Bowdoin/Colby Faceoff Classic at Brunswick, Maine.

Williams 3, Potsdam 2 - Brett Haraguchi found the net with 31 seconds remaining as the Ephs (3-0-0) won an opening-round game in the Skidmore Invitational at Saratoga, N.Y.

Women

Minnesota 3, Harvard 2 - Jen Schoullis snapped a 2-2 tie when she found the net at 14:35 of the third period to give the No. 2 Badgers (13-2-1) a nonleague victory over the No. 9 Crimson in Minneapolis.

Minn.-Duluth 4, Dartmouth 1 - Haley Irwin and Jocelyne Larocque had a pair of goals each for the host Bulldogs (9-5-2).
