Even before the start of this week's general managers' meetings in California, Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner gave every indication that New York will leave no stone unturned this winter as the Yanks try to rebuild their deteriorating roster. The Yankees are moving into a new stadium next season and have money to spend -- even more than usual. Prince Henry clearly intends to preserve everything he can from Big Daddy's kingdom, from the rhetoric to the results.

"There's nothing we are not looking at," Steinbrenner told the Associated Press when asked specifically about the club's interest in Manny Ramirez. "Personally, I like Manny. He's one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game. He's a free spirit for sure, but he knows how to win. We like some of the other guys, too. We just don't know yet."

We just don't know yet. Does any phrase more accurately describe the current state of affairs in New York? The Yankees missed the playoffs this past season for the first time 1993, snapping a streak of 13 consecutive postseason appearances. (Baseball's historic work stoppage wiped out the postseason altogether in 1994.) Depending on the formula, the Yankees squandered a payroll of between $210 million and $220 million, an awful lot of cake for a team as ordinary as vanilla ice cream.

Here's the catch: The Yankees are now moving into a new home that will generate perverse amounts of money, beginning with the 300 seats (yes, a mere 300) that alone will generate more than $60 million in revenue next year. Since the end of last season, the Yankees have erased from their payroll a group that includes Jason Giambi, Bobby Abreu, Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano and Andy Pettitte, among others. Regardless of whether the Yankees re-sign anyone from that group specifically -- Mussina, Pettitte and Abreu are possibilities -- those five players alone will give general manager Brian Cashman about $70 million to spend.

    Know what that means?

It means that if the new stadium affords the Yankees, say, an extra $20 million-$50 million to spend -- not out of the question -- New York has more money at its disposal (a combined $100 million-$120 million) to make roster upgrades this winter alone than most major league clubs invested in their entire payrolls last year.

As a result, it is entirely conceivable that the Yankees could keep Pettitte, Abreu, and Mussina (if they choose) while adding any combination of free agents from the group that includes Ramirez, Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe. Cashman could approach each of those players in the same way that Danny Ainge approached Kevin Garnett -- what if we add you and Ray Allen? -- which could easily make the Yankees a juggernaut again.

Sure, the Yankees need help is lots of areas. But they also have the resources to get it.

"Every team in baseball wants Sabathia," Steinbrenner said in the same interview with the AP. "That's the bottom line. It's not a real secret. Pitching is in the forefront for everybody, not just us. That's why starting pitching is at a premium."

You'd be missing the point if you think the Yankees merely will be committing the same sins as in years past by freely spending on the open market. For all of the problems New York had in 2008, the Yankees still won more games than any American League team but the Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Tampa Bay Rays. Chien-Ming Wang and Jorge Posada were hurt for much of the year. Even if Posada cannot reclaim his place behind the plate -- and the Yankees believe he can -- New York could improve tremendously by adding Sabathia and, say, Teixeira, the latter of whom is easily the best long-term investment available in this year's market.

With those two additions alone, the Yankees could have a rotation that includes Sabathia, Wang, and Joba Chamberlain with a bullpen anchored by Mariano Rivera. The middle of their lineup could feature Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez, who remains one of the most elite run producers in the game. Robinson Cano is more likely the player of 2006-07 (.322 batting average, with an average of 17 homers and 87.5 RBIs) than the player of 2008 (.271, 14 homers, 72 RBIs). And for all the talk that Derek Jeter is starting to show the signs of age, the Yankees captain batted .344 over the final two months of the season to finish at a tidy .300.

And please don't suggest that the numbers didn't mean anything because the Yankees were out of the race.

This is Derek Jeter we're talking about, and his ability to perform in meaningful situations is beyond questioning.

With regard to Teixeira, in particular, there has been some suggestion that the Red Sox' interest in him is merely an attempt to drive up the price for the Yankees, who are in more desperate need of the slugger's services. That is nothing but hogwash. A year ago, when the Red Sox got in on the bidding for starter Johan Santana, the circumstances were entirely different. Santana was available by trade, remember, and New York has a limited number of resources in terms of young talent. To give away young players for Santana would have stripped the Yankees of the few prospects they possess, which would have been damaging to New York's long-term operations.

Of course, that is precisely why the Yankees did not make the deal.

But money? Please. The Yankees have enough to overpay Teixeira and Sabathia and turn a sizable profit. The Red Sox are not going to do any damage to the Yankees by upping the ante in any pursuit of a free agent. The way the Red Sox can do damage is by beating the Yankees to the punch the way they did with Curt Schilling in 2003, and it certainly seems as if the 28-year-old, switch-hitting Teixeira is among the primary targets for both teams.

In this case, all it will take is money to get him.

And the Yankees now have more than they ever have had before.

    1. 1. The Yankees have far more money than anyone else and are willing to spend it. I believe we already knew that.
      2. Enough with Derek Jeter. He has been easily the most overrated player in BB over the past 6 or 7 years. The only people who seem to be unaware of that are New Yorkers, a handful of sports writers and of course Tim McCarver.
      3. The Red Sox may be willing to overpay for Teixeira, but not for a pitcher.
      4. Let's hope they re-sign Pettitt, Giambi and Mussina. Pettitt and Mussina are likely to have worse years in '09, Giambi makes Ortiz look like a gold glover and Posada isn't an everyday catcher anymore.

    1. The Yankees can go out a sign whomever they want but they still are a flawed team. Jeter, Posada, Cana, ARod are definsive liabilities. Posads, Jeter and Rivera are well on the wrong side of 30. They will be injured and their performances will decline. What makes anyone believe that Joba can physically handle 30+ starts per year? He slipped in the draft due to injury concerns and he hurt himself this year. They should be better but lets not give them the pennet yet

    1. I would love to see the Yanks bite on long term contracts for an aging Manny and a one-more-taco-away-from-the-DL Sabathia and leave the field open for the Sox in the sweepstakes for Tex.

    1. Here's hoping the Yankees sign these free-agents, in order:
      1. CC Sabatthia - over-weight & over-worked, he might as well be overpaid. He will breakdown before this year's All Star break.
      2. AJ Burnett - Over a 10-year ML career, he's 11 games over .500 w/ an ERA just under 4.00. Pile on the dough, Yanks - he can't be a worse health-risk that Pavano.
      3. Manny-Oh-Manny - Would pay BIG $$$ to see Manny's return to Fenway - and watch Beckett put one in his ear-flap. "Lay down, Manny, no need to to leave so soon".....

    1. Let the Yankees spend $200 Million this off-season - who cares? I think they have proven that throwing money around doesn't equal a championship. C.C. Sabathia? He may win 20 games for them every year but can he win them a title? Let's not over-react to what the Yankees do this off-season. Let's just focus on what the Red Sox need to do to improve.

Posted by Todd November 5, 08 02:11 PM
    1. It has been established that buying pennants is extremely difficult. You assemble nice, expensive pieces but you have no idea if they will mesh and play well together. The Yankees of the last several years are proof of this. For example, many observers always look at the Yankees in February and predict they will win the division and score 1,000 runs. That's been an absurd prediction the last two years. So let the Yankees spend all their money in the next month or so. They'll grab a nice player or three. But they will still have holes, probably in their starting rotation no matter whom they sign. Developing Jon Lester is always better than signing CC Sabathia. I like the Sox' chances next year. Theo's moves this winter will improve an already very good team. I will, however, revise my comments if he makes a change at shortstop. Nobody's perfect, after all.

    1. It's the classic Yankees business model. Spend, spend, spend on high profile free agents and hope the fans show up to the games. Should be interesting to see how many players they buy this off season with all that extra cash lying around.

    1. Stop banging on Mazz....not a hell of alot of "inside secrets" to report yet. I think his point about the Yankees apearing to have a terrible year - yet only three teams in the AL won more games - was valid. They were without their ACE most of the year and Posada for much of it as well. We saw what the Sox did when Varitek was out for much of 06. They are only a couple of good players away from being as good as any team in the league - and that is scary.

      In Theo we trust.........

    1. Come on guys, the Yanks injuries this year kept 'em out of the race. and Jeter overrated! That is the most most totally moron comment of the year! Oh that's right, we have Lugo and Lowrie! Come on folks, wake up. the Yanks will be serious contenders next year. We best start worrying about them as well as what's wrong with Beckett, who'll help Papi, and what's wrong with Papi, and who will play SS, and and and and and....

Posted by JW November 5, 08 04:49 PM
    1. Red Sox fans are obsessed with the Yankees. Let them overpay for their players, just relax and focus on a long deserved golden era of Boston Baseball. Trust me, for the past 90 years when the Yanks were on top of this rivalry, their fans weren't worried about Boston's offseason moves so long as their team was in good shape. Your team is in good shape Boston, and you deserve to enjoy baseball for as long as it lasts. Relax a little and let loose some of the hate.

Posted by yanksfanrespectssox November 5, 08 05:02 PM
    1. Yeah, what a bunch of smart alecks. I totally agree with Maz. The Yanks are going to spend a ton and there are some really good players out there. If they add CC and Burnett to Wang and Joba, that is a strong rotation. Add in whatever 5th starter you want. If Hughes or Kennedy give them anything, they will have the thing they've been lacking for years... pitching depth.

Add Texiera (a gold glover) at 1st and into the middle of that order.

Meanwhile, we are unsure of the health of Lowell, Papi and Beckett. Unsettled at catcher and SS. I like Lowry, but he's not going to generate much power and his range is questionable. Our bullpen is very shaky.

To act like none of this means anything is silly. The AL east is going to be brutal next season and into the near future. Boston is in good shape, but needs to improve. If they sit back and say, "we're in good shape", the Sox could finish 3rd and out of the playoffs real easy.

I do agree, just pumping in all-stars isn't necessarily the way to win a championship, but it likely will get you to the playoffs. Plus, the Yanks have just mismanaged their payroll and focused on big bats. Maz is talking pitching and that will work.

Look, Boston has won the east once since the Yankees have been on this run. Don't get arrogant thinking we're in every year.

Posted by Greg November 5, 08 05:06 PM
    1. Interesting you are hating on Burnett. Beckett's era is "just under 4.00" as well. Burnett's career ERA is 3.81, Beckett's is 3.78. The only reason that Beckett is anything more than 11 games over .500 is because he has played for the Sox and not the Blue Jays. You Sox fans also need to come to grips with reality and stop complaining about any team spending. You are not a small market team and actually had fewer home grown regulars in the lineup this season than every other team, including the Yankees. Ramirez, Ortiz, Crisp, Lugo, Drew, Cora, Matsusaka, Okajima, and the salary dumps of Schilling, Beckett, and Lowell and you've got yourselves a nice little spending spree that no one in Boston wants to acknowledge. In fact, ALCS game 7 starters included only two position players(Youk & Pedroia) that were homegrown. By Sox fans attitudes you would think that the Sox have produced phenomal talent that led to the titles. Not true. 2004 offered less homegrown talent. Want to see young, homegrown talent that actually play in the clutch--look at the Rays and the Phillies.

    1. I think the real story is that the Yankees are opening this HUGE ballpark just as Wall Street is laying off tens of thousands and slashing T&E budgets, and New York law firms are firing associates and dissolving at a wicked pace. How will the Yankees afford their payroll without access to all those dollars that reliant upon and associated with these lost salaries?

    1. I live in Seattle ... But spent the first 36 years of my life in Boston. Is there any hope that the Red Sox could build a larger state of the art stadium like the Yankees, Mariners, Giants, Indians and Orioles have? That way they can stabilize the ticket price and still increase their revenues thru special events, premium seats and "Red Sox Experience" type events. More revenue menas they can spend more on players and contracts. The seats are still designed for 1940's Bostonians, they can get rid of the Green Monster, etc... I know I know ... "What about the history?" Ladies and Gentlemen we are talking about Boston ... the history is all over the city. Time to plan for the future rather than increasing ticket prices.

    1. Jeter is still a terriffic table setter ,but is extremely overated as a fielder.
The yankees will sign C.C. ,but I believe the Sox will be determined not to have
Texiera become a Yankee. The Sox SIGN HIM for 8 years just like Manny!
I am sick and tired of Scott Boring. Tek should be offered 35 million for 4
years or 27 for 3...thats all. One thing more , the batting coach should be teaching
Big Papi to learn how to hit to left field or start batting him fifth. His hitting skills
are quickly erroding. Look out the Yankees will be back in the hunt, and thats great for REDSOX baseball. TONY C LIVES

Here is the problem, in my ever so humble opinion, with bringing CC to the Boston Red Sox.
There is a real concern that he would not be able to handle the Boston Atmosphere, where everyday is like a playoff game, every pitch is covered by the media from across the globe, where essentially it is the same atmosphere in which he has proven he can not produce.

This has happened before, players who have produced All Star Stats - for mid to small market teams, who fall more than flat when they wind up in the glare that is the Boston Media. The Most recent example of this was Edgar Renteria. The Sox signed him in 2005 with the goal of being the permanent long term replacement for Nomar - who was traded at the deadline in 2004. Renteria was a great player, and All Star in fact with St. Louis. When he got to Boston however, he lost it. After about 2 months into the season it became apparent that he just could not handle the scrutiny and pressure of playing in Boston, and it was not pretty, with excuses from him such as the dirt on the infield was not right, it was too cold for him: The bottom line was that - he couldn't deliver in a presure situation.

It is probably the scariest and hardest thing for any GM or front office to gauge: How a Stud player in a small market will react to the bright lights of the big city. I don't know how they measure it, other than seeing how they perform in a pressure situation - which often times in the smaller markets are few and far between. As for Renteria he was he was shipped off to Atlanta at the end of 2005, found his form once again in 2006 and was the starting short stop for the National League at the 2006 All Star Game. The sox ended up eating a ton of his contract. He always was a great player - just not in Boston. The truly sad part of this is that we basically threw away Orlando Cabrera and in retrospect it turns out had we kept him, he would probably still be starting at Shortstop for us today.

So there is the dilemma with CC - anytime he is in a pressure situation - he doesn't deliver. It doesn't mean he won't - but for the $100++++ Million he is going to get + It is just too big of a risk. And no one will know - until next October - no matter how good he does in the Regular Season.

Posted by Mike Shannon November 6, 08 07:55 AM
    1. The real story, Tony, is how the Yankees are getting even more money through the subsidized building of new Yankee stadium.

1.. Small market baseball teams are subsidizing the Yankees. Hard to believe? The new stadium costs are an expense that can be applied to reduce amounts that have to be paid as "revenue sharing". In other words, small market baseball teams will see their revenue share go down to the extent of the increase in costs to the Yankees for the new stadium.

      2. NY state taxpayers are subsidizing building the new Yankee stadium. The bonds for the construction were issued tax free, based on a value that some say was excessive. Less taxes ==> more money for baseball operations.

    1. "Empire strike back," wow, this is a hot article! By Massaroti, no less!! I think the Yankees should be cheapskates, pocket all the seat & tv revenue, field a crappier team than they have, just so the Bosox fans, or RSN, can still be at the top of the AL. After all the Sox didn't hardly spend for DiceKay, Lowell, Drew, Lugo, etc. The Sox payroll must be way down in the list!!

    1. Let 'em spend it all! I hope they get Manny so we can boo the cornrowed diva every time he comes to Fenway. Let'em sign CC Sabigass and DLowe and every other high priced disaster waiting for a place to happen. I for one will enjoy watching them become the northern version of the Baltimore Orioles!

    1. The Yankees finished in 3rd place this year. Who cares what they do? Pick it up a notch Mazz

    1. I can't stand people comparing the Red Sox to the Yankees. All of this talk about Theo not yet building a dynasty. I'm not sure if the yankee fans know this you bought a dynasty didn't build it. I do agree that the redsox over pay some players but the yankees have inflated the salaries so much that teams are forced to pay huge sums to keep their teams in the race. I love nothing more than watching the highest paid team come in third in their division and to see that pathetic daddy's boy steinbrenner have a melt down. Good thing A-rod makes 27 mil he really earns it in april. In october he bats like varitek from the left side. The sox have a good farm system (youk pedroia, lowrie ellsbury lester bucholz) complimented with veterans (lowell, beckett, wakefield) I can't wait to see manny and cc in pin stripes next year and still have the yanks miss october. Maybe next year huh?

    1. Jared - youre a MORON. They bought the dynasty in the late 90's? do yourself a favor a go look at the makeup of the team.. The core was homegrown, key players added via trades and some through free agency.....the insane spending began after the 2001 season. and we know what they did since then

Posted by pt November 8, 08 04:33 PM
    1. The Yankees "bought their dynasty"? The Yankees dynasty was the years 1996 - 2000. The team featured home grown players Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, Ramiro Mendoza,Mariano River, Andy Petitte. Yankee farmhands Jim Leyritz, Shane Spencer , Ricky Ledee had game winning hits in playoff games. Paul O'Neil was acquired in a trade for Roberto Kelly. Scott Brosius was acquired in a trade with Oakland. Tino Martinez and Jeff Nelson were acquired Russ Davis and Sterling Hitchcock. Compare that with the 2004 Red Sox with 3 home grown players on their playoff roster..

    1. Man, I love how Boston is always so concerned about the Yankees. So insecure.

Posted by Chris November 12, 08 12:57 PM
    1. Jeter is the worst shortstop. Wow. This means you think if you were picking teams, you'd pick Julio Lugo over Derek Jeter. Yeah read that sentence again.

PS Guess what world series champion had the highest payroll. Hint- It wasn't the Yankees.

    1. Thats exactly right the Redsucks not the Yankees had the highest payroll when they won the world series. Funny thing is Redsucks fans bragg about being knowledgable fans -- what a joke --

    1. What a relief to be in the California and not hear the daily crap handed out by you Boston Sports fans. Get a life-all of you. the day doesn't begin and end with a hangnail to Beckett. Life indeed does go on and it's so great to be away from all of your daily doings. It took many years to finally move out of your "little town with the big complex ' and it was worth every minute. Lotsa luck Curt, etc.

    Tony's Top 5

Things to eat during the summer

    5
Ice cream. Obvious, right? But we’re not talking about Haagen-Dazs. Go to a local stand and forgo the chain stores.
    4
Spaghetti al limone. Do a Google search for the simple recipe and use linguine. Fast. Refreshing. Different.
    3
Corn on the cob. Brush it with a little olive oil or butter and lightly salt. Then grill it. Trust me on this one.
    2
Clams. Bellies or strips, steamed or fried. We prefer the steamahs, but go to your local shack and choose.
    1
Lobster. If have a gas grill, buy the lobster pot attachment. Melt your own butter. Add some lemon. Nothing better.

    No rush to anoint Rondo
Actually Tony is on-target here! Rondo has a great up-side, but there are still parts of the game where he is AWOL. He is extremely unique with his ball-handling skills and his rebounding is also a strength. The D is also eye-opening most of the time. He is a very confident athlete, hopefully not overconfident. The C's have never had a player quite like him! However, if he thinks he's indispensible, he better think again. This team has to win now while keeping an eye on the future!

    In Boston, Bay stars
A four year $60 million dollar contract with a team option of a 5th year is not unreasonable to offer. The Yankees are in need of a left fielder after this season so it's imperative they get him signed because the rate will go up regardless at the end of the season because Steinbrenner will throw stupid money Bay's way even if it's just to drive the cost up for the Sox. Bay has earned it and proven he can play in a big market as well as the post season.
