I suppose when 35,000 Fenway fans sing and sway to one of the lamest songs ever recorded on a nightly basis, it’s difficult to point fingers.

Still…

To celebrate the Tampa Bay Rays’ division title, alt-country-rock group (or, whatever you classify clichéd schmaltz as these days) Modern West recorded the rah-rah sure-to-be (Floridian) hit, “It’s All Up to You.” The band’s lead singer: Kevin Costner, he, of course, of "Sizzle Beach, USA" fame.

As Steve Spears details in the St. Petersburg Times, the tune features lyrics such as “You got to swing for the fence. Give a hundred percent. Dust yourself off. Get up and do it again.”

Holy…Call Dylan and ask him if he needs songwriting help for his next work.

How bad is it? The song is getting skewered by Rays fans on Tampabay.com, but you can listen for yourself here.

Not to be too hard on the guy, because I’ve always liked Costner as an actor, even if it is popular to bash him. After all, he starred in the two best baseball movies ever, and a third that gave us Kelly Preston for two hours. Then again, the wife recently made me sit through “The Guardian," a movie that, no matter what, makes Costner one heck of a rock star.

Costner is also planning a sequel to "Bull Durham." Of course he is.
