Well that was...actually, it was pretty standard.

Over the course of just a few hours yesterday, the Red Sox had acquired Adrian Gonzalez, hadn't acquired Adrian Gonazlez, and finally acquired Adrian Gonzalez awarding him with a reported (wink) eight-year, $167 million handshake that likely won't be announced until after Opening Day so that the team can save from adding to its luxury tax threshold. 

For a while, it all seemed strangely reminiscent of the Red Sox ultimately walking away from the Alex Rodriguez negotiations, or the team falling short on Mark Teixeira, both of whom ended up in New York.

Not.

Again.

But the Red Sox finally have their man in Gonzalez, a player whose name had been linked with Boston for so long most (mea culpa) thought it a virtual certainty that at some point he'd end up peppering the wall at Fenway Park with his luscious inside-out swing. And the projections of what he can do with it at Fenway Park are astonishing. 

The boys over at Sons of Sam Horn (who apparently had the Samaritans suicide hotline circuits jammed at times yesterday) found this nifty analysis of Gonzalez's swing from The Pitching Academy. Wipe the drool, and then come back for more.

Here, courtesy River Ave. Blues, (as a commenter rightfully points out, via katron.org) is Gonzalez's hit chart from last season, overlaid on top of his new home, where he theoretically would have hit 30 home runs, including an additional 11 round-trippers over the wall in left.

Add in the 20 home runs he hit on the road, and that' a potential 50-home run season. Considering he'll be playing a handful of games each season in places like Yankee Stadium and Camden Yards, more isn't out of the realm of possibility.

But for now (wink), it's just the one season. Just hope Gonzalez doesn't have Carlos Boozer's number programmed in his cell phone.

By the way, there's a football game tonight.

Colleague Jason Tuohey crunched Gonzalez's numbers over the past three seasons at neutral parks, and doubled them to reflect an entire season. No comment necessary.
