Alvarez called up

Lefthander Abe Alvarez will be in the Sox bullpen tonight, recalled from Pawtucket to take the place of Mike Holtz, who was placed on the 15-day DL because of a strained muscle near his left elbow, according to manager Terry Francona.

Holtz was hurt, Francona said, while facing the last batter he faced Tuesday night, Brandon Fahey, but apparently had been experiencing some discomfort earlier. Holtz had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow in 2004. In three relief appearances for the Red Sox, Holtz has no record with a 16.20 ERA.

The 23-year-old Alvarez, who flew in last night, said he has been rained out of his starts three times in the last 10 days, including yesterday in Buffalo. The southpaw is 5-0 with a 2.18 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A Pawtucket this season. He has allowed three earned runs or less in all seven starts this season.

With there being no DH, Kevin Youkilis sits tonight, Trot Nixon bats leadoff and David Ortiz plays first base. Tomorrow, barring any unforeseen development, Youkilis will play third and Lowell will sit, with Big Papi sitting Sunday and Youkilis and Lowell manning the corners.
