‘Tek has surgery

The Red Sox released a statement today that catcher Jason Varitek underwent arthroscopic surgery for a cartilage tear in his left knee.

Varitek is expected to begin his rehabilitation immediately. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 1 after leaving the previous night’s game in the third inning due to the injury.

The team received some good news as reliever Keith Foulke on rehab assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League.

Foulke is expected to start for the PawSox in their game this evening versus Syracuse at McCoy Stadium. The righthander had been scheduled to start for Pawtucket on Sunday but was scratched during his bullpen warm-ups due to back tightness.
