25 man roster; Wake left off

Here’s the news of the day, quickly, from Terry Francona’s press conference.

Francona announced the 25-man roster for the first round of the playoffs, and it contained a surprise. Tim Wakefield, who Francona announced yesterday would be coming out of the bullpen, has been left off the roster.

Wakefield received a cortisone shot in his back after his last start, on Saturday against the Twins, and the team decided today that it would be better to let Wakefield’s back improve before potentially adding him to the roster for a series down the road. Jon Lester will take his place.


The team will also feature three catchers, with Kevin Cash joining the roster.
