TORONTO – J.D. Drew is currently at a local hospital undergoing an MRI on his back.
Drew was originally in the Sox lineup, but his back, according to Sox manager Terry Francona, has gotten progressively worse as the day progressed. Drew has missed the last three games since leaving Sunday’s game in the third inning and it doesn’t appear he’ll be in the lineup anytime soon.
Josh Beckett threw with no complaints for 10 minutes off flat ground in right field before the game. Terry Francona said Beckett with throw his normal side session tomorrow in preparation for Tuesday’s start in New York.
Tim Wakefield also threw a side session and could be in line to pitch this week in New York, but Francona wouldn’t commit to that quite yet.
Francona said Julio Lugo did suffer a setback to his left quad while running in the outfield on Wednesday. Francona said Lugo would not be able to resume his normal running activity, but said, “he doesn’t feel too bad. It didn’t get worst. His range of motion is good. It’s definitely a setback, but how far, we’ll see.”
Chris Smith is up to take Clay Buchholz’s roster spot.
