Good morning, and welcome to a slightly overcast day here at Fenway Park.
The news here this is morning is that it’s official that Hideki Okajima’s option has vested for the 2009 season. Okajima was signed to a $2.5 million two-year contract with a team option for 2009. But if he pitched in at least 115 games in 2007 and 2008, his $1.75 million option vested for next season.
Okajima is now at 123 games, putting his option in the books.
This season, Okajima has a 2.88 ERA, and a 3-2 record. He’s appeared in 57 games (56 1/3 innings) this season. He has certainly struggled more this season than last, when he emerged as a key — and almost unhittable — piece of the bullpen.
