Yanks, Boras to talk again today

Having reached agreement with CC Sabathia on a seven-year, $161 million contract, the Yankees are still in discussions for another starting pitcher from the group of A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Ben Sheets. This is consistent with New York’s plan at the start of the postseason, when the Yankees said they were focused on starting pitching.

With regard to Lowe, in particular, reports that he was close to agreeing to a four-year deal with New York are terribly preliminary, according to a source close to negotiations. The Yankees and Mets are still potential destinations for the pitcher, and it could be that the Sabathia deal gives Lowe greater incentive to go to New York.

Lowe is currently in home state of Michigan this week and is due to be married on Saturday.

As for Burnett, Toronto officials are convinced that he will not return to the team. Some close to Burnett have advised him to go the Braves over the Yankees because they believe Burnett would be a bad fit for the New York market.

Agent Scott Boras, who represents Lowe and Mark Teixeira, is due to address the media here at roughly 4 p.m. PST. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein is due to meet with the Boston media at 5 p.m. PST.
