What are the odds?

The fine folks at bodoglife.com, obviously looking for some free advertising, passed along some betting odds on the Red Sox and the 2009 baseball season this evening. And, well, they found their sucker.

As much as it pains to help out any kind of casino – because God knows they’ve got enough of my easily-earned money and, I can only assume, my readers’ hard-earned money – I always find these to be instructive. Predictions in any sport are consistently folly no matter who is making them. Buster Olney, Bob Ryan, and Bill Madden, three of the most respected sportswriters we’ve got, picked the Mariners to win the American League West last year. Related note: The Mariners lost 101 games, more than any AL team.

These odds are different than those picks. Olney, Ryan, and Madden remain (rightfully) just as well-respected now as they were before sending a team that should have been sponsored by Chico’s Bail Bonds to the playoffs. If the people making these odds blow it, they’re livelihood is at stake. You know the phrase, “I’d bet my life on it.”? Oddsmakers do that.

So, without further blowing hard, here are some pertinent, time-killing, and entertaining Red Sox odds for the upcoming year, with a few cock-eyed best bets by category:

*By “notable” in these instances, I mean germane to the Red Sox and/or eye-catchingly interesting. The full fields were so long they were indigestible. You can get the full odds on the Web site I’ve already provided enough free advertising for.
