Rain expected after first pitch at Fenway

The ominous spring sky is expected hold until after Josh Beckett tosses the first pitch of the 2009 season today at 2:05 p.m. at Fenway Park. But do not expect to see the Red Sox come to bat too many times before the ground crew rolls the tarp over the infield.

“The thinking here is that they may start, but the game will probably will be called,” said Charlie Foley, a meteorologist with National Weather Service in Taunton. “The heavy rain is expected between 3 and 5.”

Weather radar shows a solid wall of rain stretching from North Carolina to Canada. The temperature is expected to climb into the upper 40s, which is just below normal.

Festivities kickoff at Fenway Park at 1:20 p.m. The Tampa Bay Rays are in town, the team that knocked the Sox out of the playoffs last October.
