Mark Kotsay went 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI while continuing his rehab stint. He batted leadoff. Freddy Guzman went 2 for 4 with a walk and a run scored. Iggy Suarez had a double, a run scored, and two RBI. Paul McAnulty added a triple. Starting pitcher Kris Johnson allowed five runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings. He allowed six hits, walked five, and struck out two. The lefthanders’s ERA stands at 7.23. Jose Vaquedano earned the win with 2.1 innings of one-hit relief.

PORTLAND 6, Connecticut 5
Aaron Bates continued his torrid hitting, with three singles and two RBIs, raising his batting average to .348. Third baseman Jorge Jiminez also had three hits — including a triple — and a pair of RBIs. Jon Still homered, his fifth of the season. Lars Anderson went 2 for 5 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Jarod Plummer allowed three earned runs in five innings to earn the win, while Bryce Cox picked up the save with a perfect ninth, striking out two.


Frederick 6, SALEM 0
Salem managed just six hits against top Orioles prospect Brian Matusz and reliever Jake Stevens. Designated hitter Luis Exposito had a single and a double. Chih-Hsien Chiang also doubled, while Jason Place, Che-Hsuan Lin, and Kris Negron each singled. Starter Jose Capellan took the loss, allowing six earned runs in 3.2 innings.

GREENVILLE 4, Charleston 1
Rehabbing righthander John Smoltz pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking none and striking out six. He threw 73 pitches, 52 of them strikes. Leandro Marin earned the win in relief of Smoltz, pitching 2.1 hitless innnings. David Mailman, Ryan Dent, and Tim Federowicz each had two hits. Mailman and Federowicz doubled, as did Mitch Dening.
