Will John Henry eat Julio Lugo’s contract?

Sometime this weekend in Toronto, Jed Lowrie is scheduled to return to the Red Sox’ active roster and Julio Lugo could be gone. The Sox have been trying to move Lugo for some time and short of some phantom injury which would buy them more time, it may get to the point where Sox owner John Henry will have to eat the remaining $13 million or so of Lugo’s contract.

Will he do it?

“We will do what is in the best interests of the club…in all matters,” Henry wrote in an E-mail today.

Lugo is in the third season of a 4-year, $32 million deal. He’s never taken to a utility role as witnessed by his half-season stint in Los Angeles. With Nick Green playing well and Lowrie ready, there doesn’t appear to be a spot for Lugo. The Sox could give him his outright release, designate him for assignment or deal him.
