Sox meet, Ortiz rests

Two quick notes while the game moves along:

The Red Sox held a team before tonight’s game. Players and coaches met for about five minutes before the team went out to stretch and take batting practice. Terry Francona called the meeting, and he was the only one who spoke. A small sampling of players said the meeting was calm and mostly game-related.

David Ortiz got the night off in part because Francona wanted to keep him fresh for the series against the Detroit Tigers, during which the Sox will face four righthanded pitchers. More so, Francona believes needs a break after his chaotic past 10 days. “I think he’s exhausted mentally and physically,” Francona said.
