Mike Lowell will be out of the starting lineup tonight against White Sox righthander Gavin Floyd, with lefthanded-hitting Casey Kotchman starting at first base, Kevin Youkilis at third, and Victor Martinez behind the plate for the Red Sox.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona revealed tonight’s lineup alterations this afternoon during his weekly conversation with the hosts of WEEI’s “The Dale and Holley Show.”
Martinez, who was acquired at the July 31 trading deadline, will make his first stab at catching knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who will be making his first appearance since July 8.
Wakefield, who is 11-3 with a 4.31 ERA, has been sidelined with a back problem that cause complications in his calf muscle and has been on the disabled list since July 21.
To make room for Wakefield on the roster, the Red Sox designated righthander Enrique Gonzalez for assignment. It is the second time this month Gonzalez has been DFA’d.
