Papelbon sits with tight back

Jonathan Papelbon won’t pitch tonight after slipping in the bullpen last night while warming up.

Papelbon referred to the problem, which he described as tightness in his lower back, as a “minor thing” and told the Boston Herald he doesn’t expect the problem to linger.

“This is just a one-day thing,” he told the Herald’s John Tomase. “I’ll be back tomorrow. They’re going to give me the night instead of pushing the envelope. We’re up six games [in the wild card race] right now. There’s no reason for me to go out there and push the envelope when I’m going to be pushed a lot more.

“It’s a little minor thing and we’re going to stay on the side of overly cautious. Now if we were tied in the race, it would be a different story. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.”
