Red Sox move up in the draft

The Red Sox moved up nine slots in the draft in the last few days and gained another pick. Here is how:

They offered Type A free agent Billy Wagner arbitration on Tuesday than happily saw him sign with the Braves. That netted them Atlanta’s pick in the draft, No. 20 overall, along with a first round sandwich pick. That will from No. 31-45 or so depending on how many Type A FAs switch teams).

When they signed Marco Scutaro, they lost their first-round pick (No. 29) to the Blue Jays as compensation.

So the Sox will be a player in the draft. Now all they need is a new amateur scouting director to help make those picks.
