Bonser making progress in Pawtucket

Boof Bonser will start for Pawtucket tonight at Durham. The big righthander has been on the disabled list all season, ostensibly with a groin pull but at this point it’s more recovering from the shoulder surgery he had last season.

The Boofer has pitched fairly well in his last three games for Pawtucket: 11.1 innings, 10 hits, 3 earned runs, 6 walks, 8 strikeouts.

His latest rehab assignment started on May 7, so the Sox have until June 7 to pitch him in the minors. Then at that point they would have two choices: activate him or take him off the roster as he is out of options.

The Red Sox took a low-risk gamble when they acquired Bonser from the Twins in December. When he’s right, he throws hard and could be a valuable member of the bullpen.

In other minor-league matters, the Red Sox have released Devern Hansack, the Nicaraguan lobsterman who appeared in nine games for the Sox from 2006-08. … Infielder Jeff Natale, who was released by the Sox, has signed with the Yankees. … Brett Harper, a first baseman who appeared in some spring training games, was released by the Sox in March, played in the Atlantic League and has now signed with Oakland.
