Allenson close, but no cigar

We thought former Red Sox catcher and coach Gary Allenson might have a real shot at becoming the new Orioles’ manager after Dave Trembley was fired by the team last night.

The Orioles went with Juan Samuel on an interim basis. Allenson instead will become the interim third base coach.

Allenson, who was managing at Triple-A Norfolk the past four years, had managed most of the Orioles’ top minor league players who are up with the team now including catcher Matt Wieters.

He has previously served on the major league coaching staffs of the Brewers (2000-02) and Red Sox (1992-94).

Allenson played for the Red Sox from 1979-1985.
