6 Sox named to AL All-Star team

Six Red Sox were among the players included on the A.L. All-Star roster, which was announced just a few minutes ago.

Here are the six players named to the team via player selections:

– Adrian Beltre
– David Ortiz
– Dustin Pedroia
– Victor Martinez
– Clay Buchholz
– Jon Lester

Kevin Youkilis will be one of the five players eligible to be selected to the team by a fan vote. The vote will be between Youkilis, first baseman Paul Konerko of the White Sox, outfielder Nick Swisher of the Yankees, outfielder Delmon Young of the Minnesota Twins, and third baseman Michael Young of the Rangers. Voting can be done exclusively at MLB.com, and the results will be announced Thursday.

Martinez, who will be unable to participate due to injury, was selected for the second straight year, and the fourth time overall. And Pedroia, who is also currently on the disabled list, was selected for the third straight year and third time overall.

The selection is the first of Beltre’s career, despite hitting 48 home runs and finishing second in the NL MVP voting in 2004. Beltre is third in the A.L. in batting right now with a .341 average.

Lester and Buchholz join Beltre as first-time All Stars. The two are tied for second in the A.L. with 10 wins apiece, and are just two of seven A.L. pitchers to have recorded double-digit victories. Buchholz (2.45) and Lester (2.76) rank second and fifth, respectively, in A.L. ERA.

Ortiz is making his sixth All-Star appearance after being left off the roster last year for the first time since 2004. The Sox DH was named A.L. player of the month in May and is hitting .302 with a 1.066 OPS and 16 home runs since May 1.
