Ellsbury starts rehab assignment

Jacoby Ellsbury played baseball today.

He was the designated hitter for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox today, going 1 for 3 in a game against the Rays at Port Charlotte, Fla. He flied to right, singled and grounded out to the pitcher.

It was the first game Ellsbury has played since May 24. Rehab assignments can last up to 20 days. At that point, the player has to be put on the roster or otherwise dealt with.

The plan is for Ellsbury to play another game or two in the GCL before joining Pawtucket or Portland.
