Did Francona drop a hint on Varitek?

Terry Francona just did his weekly spot on WEEI.

He said the organization had a series of meetings this week to talk about what they needed to do going forward.

I found this exchange interesting. Dale Arnold asked Francona how often he lobbied to keep certain players during those meetings. Here is what he said:

“That’s the interesting one,” he said. “I think there has to be a time when you put your emotions aside and you talk about your team. Because if you don’t, you’re going to make mistakes. I don’t want to do that, either. I’ve been around ‘Tek for a long time, ever since I’ve been here. But I also want to continue to win. So when you go into these meetings, I think you try to recognize what they bring. At the same time, we’re going to try and put a team out there that can win and try not to make mistakes because of how hard emotions are.”

That certainly sounds like the organization is prepared to move forward without Jason Varitek, which is contrary to the word that was going around Fenway Park on Sunday.

Who is catching for the Red Sox on Opening Day 2011 will be the cause of much discussion, speculation and debate this winter. That we know. But given Varitek’s status as team captain and the respect he has from fans, who the backup catcher is will create a lot of buzz, too.
