Red Sox close to adding Albers

According to Peter Gammons on NESN, the Red Sox have signed righthanded reliever Matt Albers.

Sources told the Globe only that the deal was “close” to being completed.

He’ll be 28 in January and was non-tendered by Baltimore. Albers posted a 4.52 ERA and a 1.480 WHIP over 62 appearances and 75.2 innings last season.

He started his career in Houston and was one of five players traded to Baltimore for Miguel Tejada before the 2008 season.

Teams like to collect an assortment of pitchers to compete for the last one or two bullpen spots in spring training. Albers would be one of those guys.
