Game over: Red Sox 13, Northeastern 2
Thanks for reading, folks. Much appreciated
Top of the 7th: Red Sox 13, Northeastern 2
Iglesias has three RBIs on the day. David Mailman just had an RBI double. Because, of course, the mailman always delivers.
Middle of the 6th: Red Sox 7, Northeastern 2
Sox more outs to get to end a long day. The Huskies, who looked good early, have committed six errors.
Ellsbury returned to action tonight after playing only 18 games last season because of fractured ribs.
“It felt good being out there and getting some at-bats and innings,” he said after going 0 for 1 with a walk. “I feel ahead of schedule than a normal spring training.”
Mike Cameron, who had season-ending hernia surgery last August, was 0 for 2 in his return. He enjoyed just being on the field again and said his injury is manageable now.
“In the beginning of the day I feel real young and at the end of the day it let’s me know that this where you’re at,” he said.
Top of the 6th: Red Sox 5, Northeastern 2
Iglesias scored on a wild pitch. Down the clubhouse, Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron both said they felt fine and were glad to be back on the field.
Bottom of the 5th: Red Sox 4, Northeastern 2
The Red Sox have awoken. Navarro walked before Linares singled sharply to center and Sutton walked to load the bases. With one out, Che-Hsuan Lin walked to force in a run. Then Jose Iglesias slapped a two-run single to center.
Two errors by the first baseman on the same play scored another run. Off to the clubhouse. Back later with more.
Middle of the 4th: Northeastern 2, Red Sox 0
The Sox have summoned Pedroia, Youkilis, Beckett, Lester, Papelbon and others back to City of Palms as the Huskies take a 2-0 lead.
Rich Hill hit a batter before Oliver Hart crushed a double to the gap in left. With one out, pinch hitter Ricky Salvucci, the pride of Quincy, delivered an RBI groundout.
To put this in some sort of perspective, the Sox had outscored the Huskies 98-4 in nine previous meetings, 55-0 the last four seasons.
Top of the 4th: Northeastern 1, Red Sox 0
This is getting silly now as the Sox left three more runners on base. Luis Exposito popped up to end the inning. Sox have stranded five runners.
Iglesias (SS), Lin (CF), Federovich (C) and Hill (LHP) all in the game now.
Middle of the 3rd: Northeastern 1, Red Sox 0
Alex Wilson, a second-round pick in 2009, started the inning and walked two but escaped damage. The Huskies have put six men on base in three innings. New pitcher for NU is Greg Ferguson.
Top of the 3rd: Northeastern 1, Red Sox 0
Huskies fever! Ross put two runners on with one out as Exposito singled and Navarro walked. Linares reached on an error to load the bases. But Sutton grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that was crisply executed.
Middle of the 2nd: Northeastern 1, Red Sox 0
Weiland hit the first batter he faced in the inning and walked the second but escaped. “Just like Dice-K,” Nick Cafardo said.
Top of the 2nd: Northeastern 1, Red Sox 0
Ellsbury (4-3), Lowrie (5-3) and Cameron (4-3) all were easily handled by JT Ross, the pride of Newton North HS. He’ll never forget that.
Middle of the 1st: Northeastern 1, Red Sox 0
The leadoff hitter, Ryan Maguire, drilled the first pitch over the well in left. What a great memory for that kid, a senior from Arlington. Kyle Weiland then gave up a hit to Jeff Dunlap before getting out of the inning.
Pre-game: Good evening from the Fort, where it’s still 78 degrees. Much smaller crowd here for the second game of the day/night college doubleheader. But they’ll get to see Jacoby Ellsbury, Jed Lowrie and Mike Cameron among many others.
Hang with us for updates.
