Kevin Youkilis tweaked his left hip when he doubled in the seventh inning and left the game. It sounds like he will not play tomorrow.
“We’re going to have to check him out a little bit, but I don’t know about the turnaround,” Terry Francona said. “This is something we don’t want to linger and we don’t think it will, but we’ll have to keep an eye on it.”
Said Youkilis: “It’s all right. It’s a little tight.”
Youkilis was 0 for 2 with runners in scoring position and is now 5 for 27 (.185) on the season.
He was asked if he could identify any reason the Sox have been unable to perform in the clutch.
“Yeah, we just haven’t gotten hits when guys are in scoring position,” he said. “So that’s the bottom line. You have to hit the ball where they’re not with guys are in scoring position. When they get hits, the guys score. That’s how you do it. This game’s pretty easy when it’s on the outside. We get judged a lot around here. It is what it is. What are you going to do? We’re not going to give up.”
“We’re going to play hard. We’re going to score some runs tomorrow. What are you going to do? If people want us to give up and not try, that’s not going to happen.”
I’m not sure who wants the Sox to give up and not try. But clearly Kevin is frustrated. Everybody in the clubhouse is.
“We’ve just got to play better and get the job done, plain and simple,” Adrian Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez was furious with himself for lining to the second baseman with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. It turned into a double play when Jacoby Ellsbury was caught off the bag.
“I should have hit the ball off the left-field fence,” he said. “Up and away fastball, I was out in front of it. That’s a ball I drive to left field. It’s not bad luck that I hit it right at him. I should have backed it up a little more and driven it to left the way I know how to do. It’s those little things we’ve got to do better.”
At 11-15, the Red Sox have plenty they can do better. That much is certain.
Now comes Felix Hernandez. The Sox keep saying it’s early and they’re right. But May is upon us and something needs to click soon with this offense.
Thanks to everybody for reading tonight. Back at it tomorrow.
