Mostly medical type updates here today.
John Lackey is making significant progress after having a cortisone shot to his right elbow. Lackey will play catch again tomorrow. Francona said Lackey “feels good” for someone who has not had much down time from the elbow inflammation he experienced which put him on the disabled list. Lackey will also travel with the Red Sox to Cleveland and Detroit next week. Lackey is on the DL retroactive to May 12. Francona was still unsure whether Lackey would need an rehab assignment before returning to the active roster.
Francona said that Jarrod Saltalamacchia has done a good job and will continue to catch Tim Wakefield who is scheduled to start tomorrow. Jason Varitek will catch Alfredo Aceves tonight.
Bobby Jenks (DL, right biceps strain) threw a bullpen session today and will throw another one on Monday. Francona said Jenks felt good about himself afterward.
Franklin Morales, acquired in a tarde with the Colorado Rockies,on May 19th for a player to be named later or cash considerations, was up in the eighth inning last night, but it was more to loosen up than actually being considered for game duty. Francona said he’d like to get him into a non-pressure situation at first. The Sox are trying to get lucky with Morales, who has had command issues for the Rockies, who had grown tired of waiting for the 25-year-old lefty to get his game together. The Sox hope that pitching coach Curt Young has the magic touch in getting his career heading in the right direction.
