Report: Ortiz concerned about contract

According to a report by ESPNdeportes.com, David Ortiz is upset that the Red Sox have not started negotiations with him on a new deal.

But as recently as 10 days ago, Ortiz told the Globe that he was not concerned about his contract status and that talks should wait until the end of the season. It is believed Ortiz and the Red Sox front office agree on that point.

The ESPNdeportes.com story quotes “a source close to the player” saying, “David is (too) proud and respectful to say how he feels in public, but the guy feels hurt, upset by the way that he is being ignored by the Red Sox.”

That seems odd given that Ortiz went public in discussing his desire for a new contract last season on numerous occasions. Ortiz has never been reticent about saying how he feels about any subject.

It was only a few days ago when Ortiz busted into a press conference being held by Terry Francona to voice his displeasure over a scoring call that cost him an RBI. Now he’s too respectful to talk about his contract?

The bottom line is that Ortiz wants to stay in Boston and the Red Sox, for the right price, would welcome him back. There will be plenty of time to conduct that business after the season.
