The bursitis in David Ortiz’ right heel, which has been building the past few days, might require some extended rest. According to a team source, the Red Sox will monitor how Big Papi responds to treatment, but if after a reasonable amount of time there isn’t an improvement, time on the disabled list is not out of the question.
Ortiz was not in the starting lineup for both games of the day-night double-header vs. Tampa Bay.
Ortiz was held out of Game 1, and there was no word on whether he was available for pinch-hitting in Game 2.
Ortiz was hitting .300 with 24 homers and 79 RBI and was in the middle of a seven-game hitting streak.
The Red Sox used Carl Crawford as the DH in Game 2.
The Red Sox also have Ryan Lavarnway in Pawtucket who they could recall for some at-bats if Ortiz’ down time is significant.
