Red Sox pitching coach Curt Young has received permission to interview for the same job with the Oakland Athletics, Globe reporter Nick Cafardo has confirmed.

An MLB.com report earlier today indicated the Athletics, who fired Ron Romanick as their pitching coach when the season ended, want Young to return. Young spent seven seasons as the A’s pitching coach before leaving after the 2010 season to become Boston’s pitching coach in November.

Young is also a friend of A’s manager Bob Melvin, according to the MLB report.

Young has one year remaining on his contract with the Red Sox, although the Red Sox have given no update on his status. Manager Terry Francona departed after the season, and first base coach Ron Johnson and coaching staff assistant Rob Leary were both fired.
