Cherington easing the door closed on Wakefield and Varitek?

DALLAS — Red Sox GM Ben Cherington was asked a few minutes ago about the status of free agents Tim Wakefield and Jason Varitek.

Here’s exactly what he said:

“I have spoken to both and we’re not ready to commit to anything. I have spoken to both and plan to talk to them both again. Certainly we’ll do so before we make any final decision. I have a great deal of respect for both and feel like the best thing for the team and the best thing for them is, if there’s not a real role on the team, I’m not sure it’s fair. I’m not sure it’s the right thing for them or the team. But we haven’t even gotten to that point yet. I’ll talk to them again when we get closer to that.”

You’re free to interpret that as you will. But it certainly doesn’t sound like the Red Sox want to bring the two veterans back for 2012.

There are indications that the Mets could be interested in Varitek. The market for Wakefield, if any, is uncertain.
