OAKLAND — Will Middlebrooks looked a little worried after the Red Sox beat the Mariners 2-1 in 10 innings on Sunday. He injured his left hamstring while stealing second base, and the team should have a better understanding on Monday of how long Middlebrooks may be out or whether he has a tear.
The Sox would have to use a Nick Punto/Brent Lillibridge combination at third. The team recently signed Andy LaRoche to a minor league deal, but the Sox have a 40-man roster problem, which means they’d have to cut a good player to make room for LaRoche on the roster.
The Sox ideally could use a veteran corner infielder or someone with third base experience. Guys like Ty Wigginton, Mark DeRosa, Adam Kennedy, Brandon Inge, Casey McGehee, Jeff Baker and John McDonald could fit the bill.
The Padres are also said be shopping third baseman Chase Headley, who would be a more significant player.
The Sox are heading to Oakland for a three-game series and Inge, who is currently Oakland’s starting third baseman, would seem to be a perfect fit for the Red Sox.
The Sox do have extra outfielders to deal.
