Final: Red Sox 5, Rays 1

The Red Sox defeated the Rays 5-1 to improve their spring training record to 6-5 while the Rays dropped to 7-4. Felix Doubront made his spring training debut and went 1-1/3 innings. Jose Iglesias hit two doubles and Lyle Overbay hit his second triple of the spring to lead the Boston attack.

Bottom 7th: Red Sox 5, Rays 1: The Red Sox rallied for three runs to open this game up once and for all. Overbay tripled to right field and pinch-runner Mark Hamilton scored on JC Linares’ sacrifice fly. After Jackie Bradley was hit with a pitch, Jonathan Diaz doubled to the wall. Tampa Bay’s catcher threw a ball into the outfield scoring two Sox runs.

Bottom 5th: Red Sox 2, Rays 1: Jose Iglesias stroked his second double of the game but Sox couldn’t score.

Bottom 4th: Red Sox 2, Rays 1: Jarrod Saltalamacchia doubled to right, Johnny Gomes singled and the run scored on Lyle Overbay’s double-play.

Top 4th: Red Sox 1, Rays 1 Red Sox reliever Terry Doyle (who went 2-1/3 innings) allowed a bloop RBI single to Cole Figueroa after it looked as if he were going to get out of the inning by throwing a 6-4-3 double-play grounder to Will Myers, Tampa Bay’s power-hitting phenom.

Bottom of 3rd: Red Sox 1, Rays 0

Felix Doubroint lasted 1-2/3 innings, allowing one hit and two walks with two strikeouts. He threw 43 pitches, 23 for strikes. Looked rusty in his debut, but got his work in. He allowed a double to Jack Cust in the second inning. The Red Sox, meanwhile, have just mustered their first hit off Jeremy Hellickson, a one-out double by Jose Iglesias. He was driven in by a bloop single to left center from Pedro Ciriaco.

Top 1st, Red Sox 0, Rays 0: Felix Doubront, making his spring training debut, walked leadoff hitter Mike Fontenot to start the game. Doubront reported to camp a bit out of shape and needed time to get his arm strength right after experiencing early soreness.Brock Holt made a nice diving catch in foul territory off Ryan Roberts for the first out. Doubront struck out Sean Rodriguez and got Shelly Duncan on a pop up to first base.
