Decision due on Lyle Overbay

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox have no game today and the players are off. But two items to be aware of:

• There is a noon deadline to make a decision on Lyle Overbay. Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, any free agent with six years of service time who accepts a minor league contract must be told five days prior to Opening Day whether he will make the 25-man roster or not. That is today because MLB’s Opening Day is Sunday.

If that player accepts an assignment to Triple A, he will receive a $100,000 retention bonus. The player can then opt out of the contact on June 1 if not yet in the majors.

Overbay has hit .220/.327/.341 over 49 plate appearances. The 36-year-old is coming off a down season with the Diamondbacks and Braves that saw him hit .259/.331/.397 over just 61 games.

• John Lackey is scheduled to pitch in a minor league game at 1 p.m. at Fenway South. As of Monday, Jarrod Saltalamacchia was planning to catch him. The Sox wanted to keep all their starters on turn despite the day off.

Lackey will pitch in another minor league game on Sunday after the team breaks camp.
