Lyle Overbay granted release

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Red Sox have granted veteran first baseman Lyle Overbay his release from his minor league contract to pursue other opportunities, according to a major league source.

Overbay has been trying to win a spot on Boston’s bench as a backup to Mike Napoli, but the team appears to be leaning toward a combination of Daniel Nava and Mike Carp for that role. Overbay seemed to be competing with Carp and Ryan Sweeney for a spot on the Red Sox bench.

Sweeney has an opt out on March 28, so a decision will have to be made on him as well.

UPDATE, 4:37 p.m.: Overbay has signed a minor league deal with the Yankees.
