FORT MYERS, Fla. — No, the Red Sox have not made a decision about whether to keep Jackie Bradley Jr. yet. But it should be soon.
“Still working through it,” John Farrell said. “Probably like to have some sense of who are 25 guys are going to be by the end of the day [Thursday]. We want to be fair to all that are going north that they get a couple of days to prepare themselves. We’ll see how that goes.”
As it stands now, the roster is almost set. These players have almost certainly made the team:
Rotation (5): Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, Ryan Dempster, Felix Doubront, John Lackey.
Bullpen (7): Joel Hanrahan, Andrew Bailey, Andrew Miller, Koji Uehara, Junichi Taawa, Alfredo Aceves, Clayton Mortensen.
Catchers (2): Jarrod Saltalamacchia, David Ross.
Infielders (5): Mike Napoli, Dustin Pedroia, Jose Iglesias, Will Middlebrooks, Pedro Ciriaco.
Outfielders (3): Shane Victorino, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jonny Gomes.
That leaves three spots open with five players in the mix: Bradley, Daniel Nava, Mike Carp, Ryan Sweeney and probably Mauro Gomez. One of those players would have to provide coverage at first base. Carp, Nava and Gomez have experience at that position.
Carp, Nava and Gomez are on the 40-man roster. Adding Bradley or Sweeney would require a transaction.
The guess right now: Bradley, Nava and either Sweeney or Carp.
