FORT MYERS, Fla. — John Farrell said this morning that Daniel Nava is on the Opening Day roster. But he would not say the same about Jackie Bradley Jr. Not yet, anyway.
Bradley is not yet on the 40-man roster, so the Red Sox would have to clear a spot for him. That could come by either designating a player for assignment or trading one. It seems likely that the Sox are trying to trade a player — Mauro Gomez would seem like the obvious choice — before making their addition of Bradley official.
There is literally not another healthy position player in camp. So if it’s not Bradley for the final spot, the Sox will be springing a surprise on everybody. The rosters are not due until Sunday.
“We’re at the point where we’re working through some final roster situations,” Farrell said. “We’re at 40 currently, so any changes to that are going to require a process in which to go through. We’re not at the final 25 or the final 40 yet.”
Farrell said the final roster is not expected to be announced until Sunday.
“Right now, Daniel Nava is likely to be on our Opening Day roster. Beyond that, we’re not final,” Farrell said.
Bradley is in the lineup playing left field today. That is likely how the Sox plan to use him, at least until David Ortiz returns from the disabled list.
Is there a scenario where Bradley is not on the team?
“Until it’s official, yeah there would be a scenario,” Farrell said. “But that means someone’s going to come who’s already sent out or we look to do something different. But again, we’ve got some things to get through over the next 48 hours.”
That certainly sounds like a 40-man roster situation.
• The Sox intend to stretch out LHP Franklin Morales once he returns to games with the idea of creating some rotation depth. Morales will start the season on the disabled list with a lower back strain.
Once Morales returns to the majors, he would be a reliever.
• Ryan Sweeney has been offered a spot with Triple A Pawtucket. He has until tonight to give them an answer.
• Mitch Maier, who can opt-out of his minor league deal today, has tentatively told the Red Sox he would accept an assignment to Pawtucket. He has been out with a sprained left wrist and is not yet ready to play, although he is taking batting practice.
