Middlebrooks returns to Red Sox

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Red Sox have activated third baseman Will Middlebrooks from the disabled list. Infielder Pedro Ciriaco, who is out of minor league options, was designated for assignment.

Middlebrooks is in the lineup tonight at third base. Jose Iglesias is on the bench.

The Red Sox have been consistent in saying that Middlebrooks is their third baseman. They believe his righthanded power brings a balance to their lineup that will be needed over the long term.

We’ll hear more from John Farrell later on about how this will work. But it looks like Jose Iglesias will become a super-utility player with starts at shortstop (especially against lefthanders), third base and possibly even a game or two at second.

Middlebrooks was 5 of 17 with two homers and six RBIs in five games during his injury rehabilitation assignment. He walked four times and struck out three times.
