FORT MYERS, Fla. — Clay Buchholz is scheduled to make his first appearance of spring training today. It’ll probably be two innings and all that really matters is that he emerges healthy.
It’s easy to suggest the Red Sox won’t be as good this season because they lost Jacoby Ellsbury, Stephen Drew, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, three important players. The counter to that argument is the potential of a player like Buchholz.
Buchholz has the talent to win the American League Cy Young Award, that’s how good he is. The Red Sox, as good as they were, can be better if Buchholz makes 33 starts and that talent comes through.
Today is the first day of many we’ll be watching to see how that process develops.
