It’s official. Indians manager Terry Francona and John Farrell will be back on the same team again on July 15 when Francona will be in the dugout as part of Farrell’s coaching staff at Terget Field for the All-Star game.
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire will also be in the dugout along with Francona, who will be in town Thursday when the Indians come to Boston for four games.
“Both [Francona] and Gardy were excited,” Farrell said on WEEI regarding breaking the news to his All-Star coaches. “To me they’re a natural fit, some personal history, successful as Tito and Gardy have been, certainly a natural fit with the game being played in Minnesota and you want to acknowledge those who have been successful in their own right. Is there a personal connection? Certainly there is with Tito, but I also think that with Gardy it was a respectful thing, and the right thing to do on a great night in Minnesota coming up.”
For the National League, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny selected Pirates manager Clint Hurdle and Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez for his coaching staff.
Tito managed the AL team in 2005 and 2008, after winning World Series titles the season before as manager of the Red Sox. In the 2008 game, Farrell served as his pitching coach.
