Where has this guy been?
A beam of light shined onto Clay Buchholz’s disastrous season at Tropicana Field on Sunday afternoon in the form of a three-hit shutout completed in less than 100 pitches. That, folks, is what’s known as a “Maddux.”
With the 3-0 win, the Sox earned themselves a chance to take the series from their AL East partner in 2014 futility, the Tampa Bay Rays, tomorrow afternoon. Boston scored single runs in the third, fifth and eighth, all on RBI singles by Christian Vazquez, Mookie Betts and David Ortiz, respectively. Xander Bogaerts singled and doubled in just his third multi-hit game of the month, while Betts also went 2-for-4.
Dustin Pedroia sat out for the Sox after taking an elbow to the face from Tampa’s Logan Forsythe on Saturday night. Pedroia has shown symptoms of a concussion and will likely need to pass league protocol before he can return to action.
Buchholz struck out six and didn’t walk anyone to register his first win since July 18. But can he do it again? Your guess, and that of the Red Sox, is as good as anyone’s.
