Lining ’em up

I’ve already been over how I’m fine with the coaches’ approach in employing personnel on Sunday, even if there was a freak injury. Most of it, anyway. If I did have one issue, it was putting Tom Brady at risk while substituting so freely on the offensive line.

So I thought this week, to kick off our belated second look at the Texans game, I’d toss out the different line combinations the Patriots used Sunday. Eight guys were part of the rotation … three tackles (Matt Light, Sebastian Vollmer, Nick Kaczur), and four interior linemen (Logan Mankins, Dan Koppen, Stephen Neal, Dan Connolly). Mark LeVoir got reps, but only as a third tackle in short-yardage spots.

Here’s the rundown, with the knowledge that Connolly went down in the second quarter with an injury, from left-to-right on each possession:

DRIVE 1: 7 plays, 33 yards (punt)

Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Vollmer

DRIVE 2: 9 plays, 63 yards (touchdown)
Light, Mankins, Koppen, Connolly, Kaczur

DRIVE 3: 9 plays, 53 yards (field goal)
Vollmer, Connolly, Koppen, Neal, Kaczur

DRIVE 4: 1 play, minus-1 yard (fumble)
Light, Mankins, Connolly, Neal, Vollmer

DRIVE 5: 10 plays, 51 yards (field goal) *
Light, Mankins, Connolly, Neal, Vollmer

— HALFTIME —

DRIVE 6: 4 plays, 12 yards (punt)
Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Kaczur

DRIVE 7: 9 plays, 71 yards (touchdown)
Vollmer, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Kaczur

DRIVE 8: 3 plays, 2 yards (punt)
Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Vollmer

DRIVE 9: 2 plays, minus-4 yards (interception)
Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Vollmer

DRIVE 10: 7 plays, 37 yards (turnover on downs)
Vollmer, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Kaczur

* — Connolly injured on this possession, replaced by Koppen at center.
