“New England,” he said without hesitation.
Now, it’s important to note that this scout doesn’t work for the Patriots, and also that this opinion comes with a few months remaining before draft day. But there’s sense to the idea.
First, while in some circles, Tom Brady’s presence might be seen as a detractor here, it shouldn’t be. Having an established, entrenched starting quarterback means being able to bring Tebow along gradually, rather than toss him to the wolves at a position he’s not ready to play.
Second, the creativity of Bill Belichick is a factor in that you’d want to find a gameday role for Tebow, and the Patriots coach has used players out-of-position in different ways. Plus, it was just last year that Belichick and Co. oversaw the position switch of Julian Edelman, so if he can’t play quarterback (and it looks now like he can’t), all might not be lost.
Third, elements of Urban Meyer’s offense are implemented in the Patriots scheme, and some of those spread principles might make it easier for New England — when evaluating the tape — to translate what Tebow did at Florida to what he might be able to do as a pro.
Fourth, Belichick will get as honest an evaluation of Tebow as anyone could hope to get (which could also lead to him staying away), since he’s close with Meyer.
Now, I still don’t think he makes it as a quarterback and I’m not sure he’s got a future at another position. But the mere idea of the Patriots taking him has a way of creating a stir (my buddy Jason Cole had his reasons … I had mine for pegging him to Buffalo, with Chan Gailey’s presence a large part) and you can only expect that kind of speculation to get more intense from here. So what do you guys think?
