Belichick teams up with ‘Friends

Sometimes some of the things that players and coaches do in the community slip under the radar. And I know plenty of the things Patriots coach Bill Belichick does philanthropically do, because that’s the way he likes it.

But last night, Belichick took center stage served as the honorary chairperson and key note speaker at the Friends of Jaclyn Boston Gala at the InterContinental Hotel.

Being honest, I just missed Belichick’s speech, as I raced over there from a prior engagement. It was, from what I heard from a few people working the event, pretty powerful.

Friends of Jaclyn pairs teams in college athletics with children with pediatric brain tumors. I did get there in time to hear some pretty moving stories, and actually find out too that a high school classmate of mine — Bowen Holden, who’s now the women’s lacrosse coach at Boston College — is pretty involved in this and actually was one of the speakers.

Cool event, from everything I saw, and something that really shows the strength and togetherness of the lacrosse community, one that’s taken some PR hits of late, in particular. It was that community, in fact, that brought Belichick close to this charity — Friend and Johns Hopkins lax coach Dave Pietramala told the Patriots coach about his team’s experience adopting a child through the foundation.
